But it won’t be attached to Kanye.
The release of a Nike Air Yeezy 2 this October has been floated around from a few of our sources over the last few days, and we couldn’t be more excited about it – especially when you hear just who might be collaborating on it. And no – it’s not Kanye.
There was already enough Kanye-love spreading around after Nike’s first full collaborative effort with the artist, the Nike Air Yeezy 1, when it hit stores in 2009. At the time, Kanye was one of the biggest artists on the airwaves – but that had nothing on his inflated pop-culture profile in 2012. It was a combination of Kanye’s self-promotion and talent, along with the rapidly growing popularity of sneaker culture at the time, that made his second effort with Nike wreak havoc on the culture in unprecedented ways. None of us had seen anything like it.
The release day build up was intense. Jay Z and Macklemore were both spotted flexing early pairs at big events – and we are all aware of Kanye’s ability to self promote – it’s on par with his ability to self-love. For the release itself, there were only 5000 pairs of each colorway that released to the public on June 9th, 2012. The hype, paired with the limitation still sees resale prices fetch upwards of $4,000.
Three years later, it is still considered to be one of the most notorious sneaker releases in history. Sneakerheads have even started a petition to evoke Nike to re-release the shoes. And it seems they may have listened.
So let’s fast forward to last month where Kanye filed a trademark for “Red October”. Most claim to believe that there will be some red Yeezy Boosts on the way – but in light of this speculation, it could merely be a block on Nike’s ability to market a re-release of his most iconic sneaker to date. It’s also unclear what Nike will call the sneaker, with Yeezy also being trademarked to West.
But the big news is who will potenitlaly be collaborating on the new colorway. From our sources, Nike have reached out to none other than Kanye’s fellow Chicagoan, Don C.
Now that’s something to get excited about.
