As is the case for a lot of 80s basketball shoes, the adidas Originals Campus 80s has been repurposed for the streets. For the modern era, it’s been a favorite for collaborators, with 2021 seeing some creative creations from the likes of size?, Good Hood, and South Park, as well as some whimsical Woodgrain and Warewolf releases for Halloween. Now the Three Stripes looks to its own history for inspiration, honoring the iconic SL 72 all whilst bringing a periodic refresh to the OG’s materials.
As the first-ever adidas design to sport the Trefoil logo, the SL 72 has served as an inspiration to many releases over the years, though this one is unique in its own right. Not only does the Campus 80s ditch heritage nylon uppers in favor of a 70s-staple corduroy and heavy-duty twill, but it actively removes the Trefoil branding, keeping but one note of the symbol on the lateral ankle boxed in with its first use year. Other nods to the SL 72 come by-way-of retro-inspired insoles, off-white sole units — though there’s no red and blue midsole work that’s seen on the ’72. There’s a handful of elevated touches, too, including thick-overlocked stitching at the tongue, premium leather liners, and an aged-look Campus tag tucked in below the lateral posterior stripe overlay.
