Introduced to market in 1987, the Adidas Powerphase was developed in the midst of an aerobics craze. The silhouette maintained relevance throughout following decades amongst a cult-like following, but its biggest look arrived in the 2010s thanks to the now-defunct YEEZY imprint.

Rebranded as the YEEZY Calabasas, the Powerphase exploded in popularity due to its versatile design, more accessible price point, and wider availability when compared to Ye's other offerings. Adidas Originals eventually relaunched the design with a bevy of inline color schemes, but none recreated the fervor of those housed under the YZY umbrella.

With silhouettes like the Samba, Gazelle, and Handball Spezial leading the charge for the Three Stripes, it seems Adidas wants to reenergize the 38-year-old design. The old school silhouette has quietly dropped in a suede "Alumina" and leather "Sand Strata" colorways, prepping the low-profile sneaker for autumn. A "Blanch Cargo" and "Night Cargo" duo is on the way, delivering more smart finishes atop the model from '87. Time will tell whether or not the Powerphase is able to win over new audiences, but there's no denying that the newly-surfaced styles make a compelling case.
