The Super Light, more popularly known as SL, for short, series of footwear produced some of the most popular and fondly looked back on silhouettes of the three stripes’ golden age. In the days before running shoes had gone fully hi-tech, the nylon uppers and narrow, race-ready soles made the likes of the SL72, SL76, and SL80 among the lightest weight training shoes on the market. The traction herringbone outsoles and the ghillie lacing that was added with the SL76 were distinguishing features that were prized for their stylistic qualities as much as their practical benefits. The SL76 was even a regular on Starsky and Hutch, which was a big deal in the ’70s.
2020 has seen adidas tinker with the classic lineage, with the latest being this SL Workshop (SL 7600). Exactly as it sounds, the pair presents an experimental, work in progress take on the familiar SL elements, along with some modern upgrades. The nylon upper remains in place, but with outsized, leather three stripe branding. The suede utilized at the heels, toecaps and eyestays is of a distressed texture. The tongue also gives off an unfinished vibe by incorporating mesh. The herringbone sole also opts for exaggerated proportions, like the three stripe branding, while a Boost midsole adds up to date performance technology.
This debut OG-inspired colorway, which has previously sold out elsewhere, will be dropping at SNSon March 31st, for $140.
