Motor City made ’em meaningful
With the exception of New York and the Nike Air Force 1, there isn’t a city on earth that’s intertwined with sneaker as tightly as Detroit is with the adidasTop Ten.
The high-cut basketball sneaker, like the aforementioned Air Force 1 did in Harlem, became a symbol of status on the streets of Motor City in the 80s. Worn by hustlers, the sneaker soon turned into a must-have for the aspiring youth, birthing a new-look to streetwear which spread through the nation like wildfire. It wasn’t just a sneaker, it held a level of clout that few sneakers today can command.
In fact, it still remains a pop culture icon. Motor City native and singer La’Britney knows; “If you was gettin’ to the money, you was rocking the adidas Top Ten sneaker. Period.” Detroit renaissance man Stewe, who summed up the city’s alternate use of the shoe succinctly, mentioning “It originated in 1979 for the top 10 basketball players and we took it and made it for the top hustlers.”
Now, to celebrate its 40th year on the market, adidas will be bringing back the sneaker to the city that made them meaningful. kicking off this Friday, February 22nd, Detroit sneaker store Mr. Alan’s will be releasing the Top Ten with a little help from La’Britney, Stewe, and Detroit OG Mack Nickels. The sneakers will launch in-store with a live radio broadcast by Hot 107.5 at the 8 Mile Mr. Alan’s location, followed by an invite-only VIP event. Adding to the buildup, Mr. Alan’s will give away 10 pairs before it’s release — and tickets to the after-party.
