Mark Gonzales x adidas Superstar ADV “Shmoo” Drops in Black on October 9th

Back at the start of 2020. skate legend, renowned artist, and Three Stripe icon Mark Gonzales delivered an incredible “Shmoo” edition of the Superstar. Fast-forward 18 months, and he’s now ready to deliver a follow-up effort on the silhouette — this time in black.

The original Superstar design surrenders its traditional Three Stripes – which are substituted here for happy and sad iterations of Gonzs’ favorite “Shmoo” characters. Embellished in suede upon the sleek leather uppers, the patches are crafted from smooth nubuck and placed asymmetrically over the silhouette – via overlapping multiple panels – while the printed outlines of the “Shmoos’ shine with a different color on every patch. Again, these placements feature upturned smiles on the lateral and frowning ghouls on the medial, which may well be a commentary on social pressures and depression, where many of us put on a facade for others to see, where inner, unseen turmoil often lays beneath. Intended or not; it’s a powerful connotation.
