Although he only joined the Three Stripe family mere months ago, skate legend and artist Mark Gonzales is already onto his fourth footwear project with adidas, this being the first lifestyle offering after a trio of skate silhouettes. Another whimsical effort from Gonz, the “Shmoo” Superstar celebrates both the artist’s playful stylings and the rich heritage of the adidas brand in one very concise and contrasting effort — and it comes with a very subtle message.
At its core, the sneaker takes on a very retrospective vibe, pairing classic white leather uppers with aged-look sole units and shell toes. Branding is kept to an absolute minimum, including the removal of the statement midfoot Three Stripes (replaced here by perforations a-la the Stan Smith), debossed tongue branding and a solid black heel overlay. That understated minimal aesthetic sets the sneaker up for its championing thematic, a quad-set of ghastly Shmoo creatures cut out on neutral suede. But as playful as it first appears, further inspection appears to reveal an important message. Upturned smiles on the lateral and frowning ghouls on the medial may well be a commentary on social pressures and depression, where many of us put on a facade for others to see, where inner, unseen turmoil often lays beneath. Intended or not, it’s a powerful connotation.
