The Kayano 5, which originally hit the market in 1999 as a high performance running shoe, is now on the comeback — fittingly in colors that are inspired by the highest performing athletes in the world; the colors of the Olympic flag. It’s joined here by the GEL-1090 in celebrating the upcoming 2020 games in Tokyo. That sneaker was first released back in 2004 as an alternative to the premium Kayano running line. Now, the two signature ASICS performance lines link up for a special Olympic Pack, which is available right now.
ASICS Sportstyle has reconstructed the Gel-Kayano 5 in a colorful OG colorway to kick-off the 2020 celebration, resulting in something that’s equal parts futuristic as it is chaotic. The reconstructed tongue, as well as the hiking-inspired rope lacing system, give the all-time classic a brand new look. The white leather upper is upgraded by colorful suede overlays in Olympic blue, green, yellow and red, with black pops throughout.
The GEL-1090 returns in its original state, offering a retro performance sneaker that doesn’t scream 90s sportswear. As with many performance sneakers, the design team worked on the GEL-1090 pulled inspiration from an unlikely source. Motorsports. The no-frills upper recalls the streamlined and aerodynamic form of a race car. Breaking up the shoe’s performance design is a claw-print on the toe box, as though the shoe was clawed by a ferocious animal.
Take a peep at both pairs in detail below, and find them available right now at select retailers like 43einhalb and SNS for $140 and $130 respectively.
