Concept Lab // Air Jordan 8 “Bounce Back”
MJ: The King of Comebacks.
We all know about Mike and the Bulls’ first three-peat. It was, and still is, an incredible feat. Especially considering the competition Mike and co. faced over the three seasons from ’91 thru ’93. The third and final chip was the most challenging of the three. Facing off against Charles Barkley and Kevin Johnson’s top-seeded Suns was always going to be an uphill battle. The Suns were tipped to topple the mighty Bulls that year, but Chi City managed to beat down Chuck and KJ in six. Jordan was, again, unstoppable in the Finals shooting over .500 for the series, averaging an insane 41 points per game.
But the Bulls almost didn’t make it to the big dance — not only weren’t they favorites in the league, they weren’t even ranked #1 in the East.
The previous round saw the Bulls face off against bitter rivals and top-seed New York Knicks. The Knickerbockers got off to a flyer, up 2-0 in the series, and things didn’t look too good for Chicago. The Bulls managed to pull thru a win in game 3, thanks to Scottie Pippen’s 29 points off 10-12 shooting, but their star player, one Air Jordan, was having a nightmare series. Game three saw him soot a measly .167 from the field, with the two games prior not reaching above .375. If the Bulls were going to win, they needed Mike to lift.
And that he did.
We all know Mike’s competitive spirit; so what does he do the next game after shooting 3-18 from the field? He goes off for a 54-point eruption, followed up by a 29/14/10 triple-double and a 25/9 game to bury the #1 seed Knicks in six.
But we’d expect nothing less. After all, MJ built his greatness around doing things just as special as that.
What we’d love to see from Jordan Brand is this Knicks-themed Air Jordan 8 release alongside the Playoff Air Jordan 8 in a “Bounce Back” pack for the 30th anniversary of the occasion in 2023. With all the inspiration from shit-shirts, ad campaigns and magazine covers of late, we’d see it head back towards his performances on the court.
