The Converse “Mi Gente” Capsule Expresses the Diversity and Vibrancy of Latinx Culture
As Latinx communities make their voices heard this fall, Converse honors their stories on the iconic canvas of the Chuck Taylor All Star. The brand is releasing its most comprehensive Latin Heritage Month capsule to date, which includes the Chuck 70, the Chuck Taylor All Star and two ruffle tops.
A series of Chuck Taylor All Star styles, the focal points of the capsule, represents the diversity, duality, and vibrancy of Latinx culture through prints inspired by Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and Mexico.
The Chuck Taylor All Star is adorned with an all-over jacquard butterfly print and a butterfly applique on the tongue that honors the Mirabal sisters of the Dominican Republic — nicknamed “Las Mariposas,” or the butterflies — who, in the fight of their lives, became symbols of democratic and feminist resistance.
This Chuck Taylor All Star high top brings Mexican-American heritage to an all-time design. A deep blue leather ankle patch is intricately cut out in the style of papel picado — traditional Mexican paper folk art. Female-empowered gold hoops join together on the opposite side in an Otomi-inspired print.
Taking cues from Puerto Rican culture, the canvas upper of the Chuck Taylor All Star high top is crafted with ruffle-edge details inspired by the aesthetic of Bomba dancers, and appearing in the accompanying ruffle tops in white and tart orange.
The canvas upper of the Chuck 70 features an all-over, color-contrast ¡Mi Gente!” print, serving as a call to action and unifying the core beliefs of family and identity within the collection. The minimalist shoe has unique details, including the Spanish letter “ñ,” which is given center stage on the All Star ankle patch. With ¡Mi Gente! By You, customizable Chucks allow for a personal take on the silhouette.
