Air Jordan 35 “Fear” (All-Star) Arrives May 11th
It’s OK if you’re scared. A profound message of self-awareness, confronting your fears, and being patient with your own process was the centerpiece of Jordan Brand’s “Look Me in the Eyes” advert from their 2008 Become Legendary campaign. In the revealing clip, Michael tells us about his one true fear is and how it became his motivation to succeed and surpass his own expectations.
The easiest explanation for the road to success? Self-belief, hard work, and patience. Just ask Micheal: “I have something more important than courage. I have patience. I will become what I know I am.”
To this day, the campaign motivates me, and likely many others, to an infinite level. It’s one of the rawest Jordan Brand and Michael moments I’ve encountered. It sends a positive, reassuring message that it’s O.K. to be scared. We all are. Even Michael fucking Jordan is. MJ then teaches us that his fear is his biggest strength, as he turns it into his motivation.
The chilling-yet-inspiring campaign led to a series of inspired Air Jordans five years later, inclusive of the Air Jordan 3, 4, and 5. The three-piece pack became a widely-loved collection, with pairs still fetching some hefty prices on the aftermarket. It’s also served as inspiration for many custom kicks over the years, too. But since the 2013 releases, we’ve rarely seen anything replicated from Jordan Brand — perhaps the Sequoia Air Jordan 8 the closest we’ve gotten. But fresh new images of an Air Jordan 35 “Fear” (All-Star) appearing today has.
Though there are no overt links to the collection, its colorway perfectly captures the aesthetic of the 2013 Air Jordan 3 with the same name. Smokey grey suedes meet sweeping jet blacks, while orange accents complete the unmistakable combo. Though there are no flecked midsoles (there is on the laces, though) or elephant print present, the Air Jordan 35 differentiates itself with the introduction of quilted collars. Sole units are flipped, too, putting icy white underfoot with midsoles painted in black. Completing the design is a cool grey Eclipse plate at the midfoot, and Nike Air branding in the rear.
