When the Air Jordan 1 arrived in 1985, the “Bred” colorway became the headline-maker. Its black-and-red blocking, tied closely to Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls uniform and the NBA’s strict dress code at the time, gave the shoe an instant edge.

But the Air Jordan 1 “Royal” told a different story.

Unlike the “Bred,” the “Royal” had no real on-court legacy to lean on. It was not tied to a signature game, a playoff moment, or a famous highlight. It also had little to do with the Bulls’ red, white, and black palette. Instead, its black-and-blue build pushed the Air Jordan 1 into a different space entirely.

That separation from team colors mattered. The “Royal” showed the Air Jordan 1 could exist beyond the hardwood, not just as a basketball shoe, but as something that fit everyday style. In hindsight, it helped set the tone for what the Jordan line would eventually become: performance footwear with a life well beyond the game.

Much of that identity traces back to one image.

In 1985, photographer Chuck Kuhn captured Michael Jordan at an Oregon airstrip wearing a matching black-and-royal-blue tracksuit. The shot, later known through the famous “Flight Guy” poster, gave the “Royal” its own mythology. It did not need an NBA moment. It had an image, a mood, and a sense of style that still feels important four decades later.

Now, the Air Jordan 1 High OG “Royal” returns on October 10, 2026, bringing the colorway back in its traditional leather form for the first time since 2017.

“Note”The 2026 Air Jordan 1 High OG "Royal" re-release is accompanied by a nostalgic box design

The 2026 release moves away from the recent “Reimagined” suede treatment and returns to the familiar High OG setup. A black leather base anchors the pair, while the titular Royal hits the toe box, Swoosh, heel, ankle collar, and outsole. The shape and blocking stay close to the original formula, with one small update collectors may notice: the blue leather appears to carry a touch more texture than the 2017 retro, giving the panels a little more depth in hand.

Jordan Brand is also leaning directly into the shoe’s history with special packaging. Instead of the usual Air Jordan 1 box, this release arrives in a box covered with Kuhn’s 1985 “Flight Guy” runway image. Additional outtakes from the Oregon shoot appear inside, tying the release back to the moment that helped define the “Royal” outside of basketball.

A fitting touch for a colorway that never needed a box score to matter.
