Salehe Bembury’s debut collaboration with Boston-based New Balance certainly took the sneakersphere by surprise. But then again, Salehe has been surprising people since his days at Payless, working his way up to Cole Haan, to YEEZY, to Versace, and finally, out on his own. From his debut “Peace Be the Journey” 2002R release in October last year, to his recently-revealed collaboration with Crocs, it’s evident that Salehe has his sights firmly set on the great outdoors. His next link-up with New Balance is no different, with this freshly-teased Salehe Bembury x New Balance 574 “Yurt” — a traditional portable dwelling for nomadic groups in the steppes of Central Asia.
They too typically have a natural undyed appearance to their traditional animal skin-covered exteriors, seen here in New Balance standard grey — though this time it leans more towards bone hues than cool blues. There are modern versions of the yurt, too, often inflatable, with a nod at the added heel valve and ripstop tongues. Other details include co-branded tags throughout, pebbled ABZORB midsole peppered with grey inserts, and rugged rubber outsole.
Update 09.30.21 Salehe Bembury and New Balance have officially unveiled the New Balance 574 “Yurt” — a sneaker that comes in five colorways — as part of a wider “Universal Communications” collection. Outside of the first-revealed option, three new inclusions look to select locales across the nation. Firstly, Bembury visits the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve for an iteration bold, rendered near fully in bright aqua. Utah is next, which serves up piping-hot pops hot pink, blue, and burgundy atop a sail base, before finishing the tour at the Sequoia National Park with a pair clad in earthy greens, burgundy, and tans. The fifth and final pair (not pictured) is a black and grey banger atop a bright blue outsole.Update 10.05.21A release date for two of the five (Sharkskin and Team Forest Green) Salehe Bembury x New Balance 574 “Yurt” colorways has been earmarked for October 22nd, though details on their delivery remain hazy.
