First Looks // size? x New Balance 550
From a practically forgotten-about silhouette to Instagram indie-scene “it” show, the New Balance 550 has seen a transform like no other in recent times. The overarching resurgence for clunky retro hoop shoes can be pinned to the aforementioned Instagram mood boards who have been pushing the narrative for a minute, but the silhouette rose to notoriety thanks to an initial collaboration from Aime Leon Dore late last year. But before we get stuck into a bevy of general releases, it’s time for UK’s size? to put their spin on the low-cut silhouette, and they do so in a lighter, bright fashion.
If we look at the ALD effort and there’s, there are only a few subtle tweaks; Here, the UK retailer has swapped out blacks for light greys, and deep reds for vibrant orange. White leather uppers and its accompanying hits of sail at the midsole, tongue, and laces remain, while co-branded tounges are bypassed in favor of size?-labeled insoles.
According to accessible audio recorded by Size? buyers for their new app, the team was touched by the Americana, Ivy League look and even went as far as visiting schools in Greece for inspiration for their full head-to-toe kit. And that kind of rubs the salt into the wounds of the US market, who are still waiting for its first mainline release of the silhouette, while those in Europe receive these after already obtaining two GR colorways late last year.
There is good news, though, with the retailer expected to offer these for an international market. Though a release date for the pair is yet to be set, you should expect to see these arrive fairly soon — so be sure to keep your eyes locked on our official Twitter account for further updates.
In other New Balance news, there’s a Chinese New Year 920 “Year of the Ox” on the way.
