Nike Air Max 90 “Pirate Radio” Releases February 13th

With sneakers now well-engrained into modern culture, Nike has found itself at the center of some pretty notable moments. But it’s not just the modern era in which Nike holds in high regard, with the brand continuously diving into cultural eras past for inspiration for their lifestyle division. This rings true for their latest Air Max 90 effort, which pays tribute to the pirate radio scene that thrived in the United Kingdom in the 1960s. A strange move, considering Nike’s stance on unauthorized use of their branding (fakes and imitations), but nonetheless, it’s a nice tribute to an important period in history.

Of course, this isn’t the first time the Swoosh is honoring the radio medium. Back in 2006, Nike collaborated with British artist Ben Drury for an Air Max 1 that featured the text “Hold Tight” embroidered on the tongue—a reference to the renegade movement. More than a decade later, you can find similar motifs on this Air Max 90; radio waves found streaming across the heel plates, with the famous skull broadcasting imagery printed beneath the shoe’s icy translucent outsole — even the tri-color arrangement of the model honors pirate radio’s UK roots with a Union Jack flavor spread on thick throughout.
