The Air Max 96 is often overshadowed by the successes of is pre and proceeding efforts; the Air Max 95 and Air Max Plus — even Nike didn’t give it its proper recognition for 2005’s “History of Air” campaign, which for some reason skipped the silhouette. But avid fans of the silhouette were somewhat treated to a retro of sorts for its 20th anniversary in 2016, with Nike re-issuing the Air Max 96 and Air Max 96 II, albeit with a with the midsole from the Air Max 95 Ultra. They did this because the OG midsoles are hella costly and with the silhouette’s limited appeal, it made more sense to deliver a cheaper drop.
Now, based on these leaked images by sinshouhin, the Air Max 96 II is getting a proper re-release with a true-to-the-OG segmented Air Max on the outsole. With this news, and the cost of producing the aforementioned midsole, you should also safely assume to see the Air Max 96 receive a retro, too, as they share the same exact cushion tooling. First up is the return of the OG Air Max 96 II “Cherry”, which is expected to land in early 2021, but we’re still waiting on official confirmation.
