25 years ago, Christian Tresser’s Air Max masterpiece was born. The sneaker’s radical combination of reflective overlays, curved lines, and metallic silver finishes anchored around the brand’s biggest Air bubble yet, was as avant grade as it got. Like many of Nike’s designs of the era, the shoe was inspired by industrial design, with Japanese bullet train influence so prevalent that its debut colorway quickly became known as the Silver Bullet. That OG offering has been the basis of many off-set colorways, each donning a heavy set of metallics and reflective. And with both the OG and its countering “Gold Bullet” colorways set to return in 2022, it’s time for something new, with this Nike Air Max 97 “Black & Gold” bringing a new twist to the silhouette’s storied lineage.

The pair is blocked into three distinct sections; solid black bottoms, metallic gold uppers, and jet black tongues and liners, with only a few variations in between. Resting atop a completely murdered-out sole unit sits a golden mesh upper, with mudguard and reflective overlays of metallic gold. The Swoosh at the midfoot complies with the theme through the golden thread. The same can be said for the tongue logo and rear pull detail; both of which sit nested within an all-black finish.
