Official Looks at the Nike Air Max Plus “Sunburst”

Bursting with color!

Previewed late last month as part of the Nike/Footlocker “Evolution of the Swoosh” collaborative pack, the “Sunburst” Nike Air Max Plus pays tribute to one of Nike’s earliest modifications of the Swoosh.

The Sunburst logo (commonly known as the “Pinwheel” design) was developed in 1972 while considering how to translate the asymmetry of a single Swoosh to apparel. The circular nature of the design allowed for club names to be arched over it — a regular conceit in collegiate and sportswear graphics of the era. Anchored down in a black and red mesh upper, the air’s signature wavy cage overlays arrive in deep red translucent finish — as do the profile mini jewel Swooshes. Perched just in front of the ankle is the oversized Pinwheel logo, which appears again on the insoles, and also inspires the four-colored lacestays. Joining the lateral logo in championing the silhouette is a vivid red mudguard-to-heel overlay in smooth leather, matched in color by its plastic toe caps and tongue tips. Red-to-black gradient midfoot shanks wedge between the all-black sole unit, which is filled with a University Gold Air support system.
