Nike’s penchant for bare-Air experimentation on retro silhouettes has been a consistent focus for the brand, spawning impressive and widely-loved creations like the Vapormax Plusand 360, and rather questionable subjects like the Vapormax Gliese. Though it may be a little too early to call, their next sole-less silhouette, the Nike Air VaporMax EVO, looks to be a winner.

Having already previewed a handful of other “Evolution of Icons” Air Maxes, it’s evident that Nike Air VaporMax EVO fits the mold. Though unlike the others, which seems to draw design elements from consecutive Air Max models (i.e, 1993 through 1995) the Nike Air VaporMax EVO picks parts from anywhere and everywhere. Though there’s an obvious connection to the Nike Air VaporMax Plus, it’s myriad of design cues throughout spans over 30 years of Air Max silhouettes.

For the Nike Air VaporMax EVO, the bare-Air sole unit aligns closely to the contemporary shape seen in the Vapormax 2020 Flyknit, though it still has an overall aesthetic that marries it tightly to the marquee VaporMax Plus, while toe boxes reference 2019’s Air Max 720. The aggressive white forefoot overlays are ripped straight from the Air Max 96 ii, as is the tongue-to-toebox overlay, while the iridescent and caged quarter panel just to its rear belongs to 1999’s Air Tuned Max. The Air Max 93 is featured at the tongue and heel, complete with its signature oval Nike Air badge, with all of the aforementioned coming wrapped at the base by sweeping, straight mudguard that’s reminiscent of the Air Max 90. Unlike the previously-previewed “Triple Black” release, this pair also takes on its each design element’s respective OG colorway too.

Update 02.28.21 A release date for the Nike Air VaporMax EVO has been confirmed by Finish Line and JD Sports for March 26th, 2021. If you’re planning on picking up a pair on release day, make sure you head to our dedicated Nike Release Dates Calendar to set yourself a reminder for the release.
