Botched restorations. We’ve seen it time and time again on priceless works of art, most recently on the now-dubbed “Potato Head of Palencia” back in November. Though there have been many fails, none quite live up to the first viral instance (also in Spain) back in 2012, where the incident of Ecce Homo (“Behold the Man”) took the internet by storm. While press accounts agree that the original painting was artistically unremarkable, its fame derives from a good faith attempt to restore the fresco by Cecilia Giménez, an untrained amateur. The intervention transformed the painting and made it look similar to a monkey, and for this reason, it is sometimes known as Ecce Mono (“Behold the Monkey”) It’s virality spread to all corners of pop culture, including Montreal’s Dime, who found amusement in the story; and as a result, curated a number of apparel pieces in appreciation. Now, nine years later, it seems like the Canadian imprint just can’t let the joke go, with homages picking back up by-way-of these two defaced Dime x Reebok BB4000 “Ecco Homo” releases.
Their world-renowned portrait’s only appearance is at the tongue’s white woven label in royal and tan/black respectively. The two colorways take cues from the aforementioned tags, with one appearing in a white construction paired with royal Vector sweeps, the other in a heavy flax suede atop a solid black sole unit. Both pairs come completed by Dime tags on the lateral ankle, embroidered branding in the rear, and co-branded insoles.
