There are only a handful of identifiable moments in NBA history that directly influenced the success of a sneaker release. What Vince Carter’s monster Olympic dunk did for the Shox, Dee Brown did for the Reebok Pump Omni Zone II.
During the 1991 NBA Dunk Contest, the Boston rookie stole the show from the get-go and never looked back – and it wasn’t even an actual dunk that wowed the crowd. Prior to his first dunk, Dee prepared for take-off by pausing after his warm-up, bending over to his feet, and pumping up his shoes – the Pump Omni Zone II. The stunt immediately amused the audience, while the actual dunk – a self-lobbed alley-oop reverse jam – was just the icing on the cake. Naturally, the exposure lead to a hefty on-flow of sales for Reebok, which once again cemented them as the then-premier footwear provider on the NBA hardwood.
Now, after releasing the OG for its 30th anniversary earlier this year, Reebok has come through with a special Celtics color scheme to close out their celebrations. It ostensibly honors Dee, with a black scheme no-too-dissimilar to his famous Dunk contest colorway, but the Bok adds in hefty hauls of green, swaps out some leather for sporty mesh, and adds special parquet floor insoles that honors the Boston Garden hardwood.
