For the 2002 NBA All-Star Game in Philadelphia, reigning NBA and All-Star Game MVP Allen Iverson sought approval to honor fellow Sixers’ legend Julius Erving through wearing his retired number 6 for the game. Though Dr. J’s number didn’t bring any good luck (Iverson dropped only five points) it did bring together the two generations of hoops fans as one. In the lead-up to the game, Iverson said he wanted to wear Erving’s number and take the braids out of his hair to sport an afro similar to the one Erving used to have. The latter he did not do, but the jersey swap itself was a nice touch. Now twenty years on, Reebok and Allen will honor the occasion’s anniversary with a special-edition Reebok Question Mid “Dr. J” colorway — likely to arrive for All-Star Weekend 2022.

Allen Iverson wearing #6 to honor Julius Erving during the 2002 NBA All-Star Game
As you can see, the pair pulls direct inspiration from AI’s on-court garb, with stylized #6 digits in the rear, and a scheme constructed mostly in white, red, and gold. The latter hit the eyestay accents and tongue Vector logo in matte metallics, whilst red bolsters up the tongue liner, heel panel, and midfoot Reebok motif. The latter is replicated again underfoot, seen through a translucent outsole, and the pair is completed by a set of special graphic insoles that depict Allen Iverson with the infamous Dr. J ‘do.
