These Two Air Jordan 4s Pay Homage to Sal’s Pizzeria from Spike Lee’s ‘Do the Right Thing’

I’m Buggin’ Out

2019 not only marks the 30th Anniversary of the Air Jordan 4, but it’s also the birthday for Spike Lee’s cult-classic film ‘Do the Right Thing.’ The film is widely regarded as the first instance of sneaker culture converging with popular culture, with Giancarlo Esposito’s characther, Buggin Out’s iconic Air Jordan 4 “White Cement” street scene being touted as the first Air Jordan focused scene in film history.

That moment was already celebrated in mid-2017, but for the film and the sneaker’s 30th anniversary, they’re taking it to Sal’s.

A brief insight: Sal’s Pizzeria Brooklyn, is owned by, of course, an Italian-American named Salvatore “Sal” Fragione (go figure). But the story starts when neighborhood local, Buggin’ Out gets griped when he sees that the pizzeria has only pictures of famous Italian Americans on the wall, when the majority of his customers are black – which eventually leads to a Boycott of Sal’s and into violence. Spike Lee’s character, Mookie works for Sal’s as a delivery man.

So now that you’ve got the back story, you can see where the inspiration for both pairs comes from, although it has yet to be confirmed by Jordan Brand. It is interesting to note that Spike Lee himself liked the images of the white pair on Instagram — so we can take that as some form of confirmation, right?!

We don’t yet have any official looks, just these mock ups via @zSneakerhedz. Both pairs are said to arrive around April 2019.. Stay tuned for more.
