The NBA’s Most Valuable Player just became a lot more valuable (in the monetary sense) after today signing with Jordan Brand for the next decade. The 10-year extension is the most lucrative that the Jordan division has offered an athlete to date, aside from the brand’s namesake.

Westbrook originally signed a five-year deal back in 2013 that was set to expire next year. But Westbrook’s long-time agent Thad Foucher negotiated the decade-long extension that retrospectively apply toward his 2016-17 MVP season, according to sources. And as Russ would say – why not? The man commands MVP-worthy payment for what he has done on the court for Jordan Brand in the year just passed.

The long-term extension will link the 28-year-old Westbrook with Jordan Brand through as long as the 2025-26 NBA season. The deal will also include both on- and off-court signature sneakers, new territory for Westbrook. As he has continued to lead the Air Jordan game shoe each season, the brand launched two off-court geared silhouettes, dubbed the Westbrook 0.1 and 0.2, but had held off on designing a performance signature shoe for the hardwood.

Now that the ten-year deal has been signed off, the process begins in developing Westbrook’s first on-court signature sneaker with the Brand. The sneaker is expected to have crazy performance input from Russell, who was know for his on-court hybrid versions of Jordan models to perfectly tailor his game style. Add to that Westbrook’s very unique eye for fashion – this will be “unlike anything that Jordan Brand has done before” — according to an industry source. There will of course be the addition of fashionable off-court apparel and his continued lifestyle collaborative sneakers will again be a consistent part of the Jordan release schedule.

Westbrook has been known for his hybrid Jordan 30.5 to suit his on-court performance.

But more creative control is not the only perk for Russell, with Jordan Brand committing to an annual donation to Westbrook’s “Why Not?” Foundation, which aims to launch even more “reading rooms” and other educational and athletic initiatives for kids in Westbrook’s two home bases of Oklahoma City and Southern California.

As the two sides look to continue their partnership beyond the prime of his career, the deal also includes a rare “ambassador clause,” providing Westbrook with appearance opportunities and additional Jordan Brand legacy potential, even after he retires from the NBA – similar to what we have seen in LeBron’s record-setting lifetime deal with Nike.
