The Air Jordan 1 “Rookie of the Year” Releases This Month
Best of the Bunch.
We all know Mike’s fashion sense is a little out there. Or just not there at all. But that hasn’t stopped Jordan Brand from going there over the years. But this is a different class to the Lettermans and Ugly Sweaters of the world. This one has a little bit of drip.
Let’s put it on paper: It’s inspired by what Michael Jordan wore during his Rookie of the Year acceptance speech. As far-reaching an uninspired as that sounds, the colorway is actually a beauty. But first, here’s a bit of history:
On April 30, 1985, Michael Jordan accepted the NBA’s Rookie of the Year honors. During the year, he averaged 28.2 points per game and led the Chicago Bulls to a playoff berth, albeit getting swept in the first round. A young, shy Michael Jordan delivered a shirt, yet humorous speech, saying of the playoff L “Hopefully next year will be more promising,” he says, “If not, maybe I’ll retire after two years.” (which you can watch below)
The colorway, like Mike on the night, is draped in Gold Harvest and paired with black. Highlighting the shoe is a detached layer around the customary ankle collar – very similar to the Off-White Jordan 1s, that displays rookie stats and a hidden message by MJ himself.
That message reads: “This award is nice, but I just feel it is very important for each individual to go out and contribute to his team.”
The Air Jordan 1 Retro High OG “Rookie of the Year” is locked in for an November 17th release. It will drop at select Jordan Brand retailers and on Nike.com for $160.
Tokyo-based retailer atmos will be releasing them early at this year’s atmoscon on October 8th.
