City Jeans, the family-owned sneaker and streetwear institution rooted in the Bronx, has teamed up with adidas to deliver a release that’s both a design statement and a cultural tribute. The adidas x City Jeans “Diamond in the Rough” Gazelle arrives October 4, celebrating resilience, creativity, and the brilliance hidden within communities that thrive against the odds.
The Bronx has long been defined by its challenges, yet it continues to shape global culture through its music, style, and energy. This duality is at the heart of the sneaker’s design. A black tear-away nylon upper represents the rough exterior often perceived from the outside, while a gem-toned blue layer beneath reveals the vibrancy and creativity of those who rise above adversity. Diamond-textured tongues and reflective Three Stripes add a striking touch, symbolizing the brilliance of those who shine under pressure.
“City Jeans has always been about more than sneakers. We exist for our community and for the people who inspire us every day,” said Ben Winrauke, COO of City Jeans. Head Buyer Eric Canals added, “Partnering with adidas on this release allows us to tell a story that reflects the Bronx itself: tough on the surface, yet filled with creativity, resilience, and diamonds that shine. I would know, I’ve lived here all my life.”
The name “Diamond in the Rough” pays homage to individuals who emerge from challenging environments to achieve greatness. Among them is Bronx native and rapper Dave East, who represents the cultural architects honored by this release. The sneaker celebrates those who transform overlooked beginnings into lasting cultural influence.
The adidas x City Jeans “Diamond in the Rough” Gazelle will release exclusively through City Jeans in-store and online at cityjeans.com on October 4, retailing for $130.
