adidas D Rose 1 Returns in 2020
The decade-long partnership between adidas and Derrick Rose hasn’t gone as smooth as both parties would have liked since the MVP guard signed a 13-year, $185 million extension in 2012. Just 64 days after Rose signed the mammoth deal with adidas, Derrick would tear his ACL in a playoff game against the Philadelphia 76ers. He would go on to miss the entire following season, and was the first of several significant injuries that would often keep Rose off the court. adidas banked big on the star, who was reaching heights of $40M in annual sneaker sales before the incident, only to see it all fall away. But the former MVP’s resurgence is paving the way for a comeback — both for the player and the brand. The official unveiling of the adidas D Rose 10 last month made waves, riding off the coattails of Rose’s rise in 2019, which saw the 30-year-old drop a career-high 50 points against the Utah Jazz, a franchise who cut him mere months before. Now, adidas look to maximize the opportunity, as well as celebrate the highs and lows of the ten-year partnership by bringing back 2009’s D Rose 1 for 2020.
The first pair to surface is an all-new colorway (yet oh-so-similar to the OG pictured above) for Chinese New Year, dubbed “Forbidden City.” First looks at the pair come courtesy of internal catalogs, which depict a black-based pair with metallic gold accents at the heels, red midsoles, and white outsoles. The material makeup is unclear at this stage, but it’s likely to be leather or nubuck. A price point is set for $170, and it’s set to release alongside other adidas Hoops sneakers in a Harden Vol. 4, Pro Model and Dame 4 for the annual celebration.
This indicates a likely retro schedule for the silhouette, and if that’s true, we’re hoping we get some OG flavors, too! Stay tuned for more.
