First making its way to shelves back in 2015, the adidas NMD was welcomed with an unpredictable surge of hype, due in part to its insane level of comfort, its versatility, its Instagram post-worthiness, and — of course — Kanye West and his timely shift to adidas. Over the past six years, we’ve seen the silhouette go through a handful of remakes, from Pharrell’s collaborative NMD Hu to the R2. But now adidas has a new series in the works, with this adidas NMD S1 the newest in the sneaker’s heralded line.
Almost unrecognizable to its own DNA, the new S series NMD dons a woven sock-like upper that’s more in line with the Nike VaporMax Flyknit than anything from the adidas back catalog. It arrives in four distinct sections; ribbed toes, translucent mid panels, flexible heels, and a tightened collar and tongue weave. The (presumably) BOOST-loaded midsole now comes fully encased in a milky-translucent high rise midsole wrap which features protruding plugs that nod the original silhouette. The outsole, a feature really spoken about, is one of the pair’s most intriguing aspects, including special Trefoil tread and an instep block that once again odes the OG.
