Adidas is no stranger to the world of high fashion. Since at least the early aughts, the German sportswear brand has been leading the charge with its Y-3 imprint, a partnership with none other than Japanese legend Yohji Yamamoto. Recent years has seen the company release collections with Gucci, Prada, and Balenciaga, with the most latter potentially responsible for the XLG Runner Mule.
An exaggerated, fashion-forward take on retro running styles, the silhouette presents an easy-to-wear update on the original XLG Runner. Synthetic panels and mesh layers come together with curved lines and a laceless tongue for an aesthetic that could easily be mistaken for an avant-garde house's latest foray into footwear.

As with its predecessor, the latest mule offering from the Three Stripes couples a retro performance upper with a chunky, on-trend sole unit. Much less streamlined than what's found on the Adios Pro Evo 2, the brand's current marquee running shoe, the aggressive tooling consists of dual-density foam (Dreamstrike insert) for reliable comfort. The tread pattern draws inspiration from Adidas' trail-ready footwear from the 1980s, providing a bold aesthetic to the laceless silhouette.
The XLG Runner Mule is the latest example of the German sportswear juggernaut reimagining some of its performance heritage for a fashionable crowd. The Rivalry Mule presents a comfortable option for women rooted in basketball legacy. The Stan Smith Espadrille by CLOT also updates the tennis icon for lounging at the country club.
