“Olympic” adidas ZX Torsion Was Set to Celebrate the Tokyo Games
With the COVID-19 crisis controlling the world’s event schedule, we’re bound to see a lot of mistimed sneaker releases for the foreseeable future. After several pushbacks, most notably Jordan Brand’s shift of the Air Jordan 5 Fire Red, none will be more monumental than the abundance of Olympic-themed releases that were scheduled to arrive this summer. With the Tokyo Games’ future plans now laid out for 2021, sneaker brands are stuck sitting on celebratory stock, like this “Olympic” adidas ZX Torsion.
Here, adidas Originals had planned to celebrate the Tokyo 2020 Olympics with a special edition of the new-to-line ZX Torsion with a myriad of callouts to the Games, the country, and their shared history. The black-based pair ranging in materials from textiles and leathers to suedes and plastics, all of which are barely noticeable throughout the flurry of contrast stitching throughout. Nationally speaking, beneath the tri-colored midfoot Three Stripes, you’ll find a Rising Sun-inspired pattern inspired by the nation’s pre-WW2 peace treaty flag, along with the outsole’s white/red forefoot in mimicking the nation’s current flag. Tongue and toebox stitching mimic vintage garb from the 1940s — the time in which the nation first hosted the Olympics, and red and white Torsion dubraes complete the national link. In terms of honoring the Games itself, there’s 5-colored stitching in the rear, metallic gold hits on the instep, and an Olympic Torch-tweaked Trefoil logo on the tongues.
It’s still unclear if these will release on the intended schedule or be held off until next year, but we’ll be sure to keep you updated either which way. Until then, enjoy an official look at the “Olympic” adidas ZX Torsion here below.
