Air Jordan 1 Japan “Midnight Navy” Reissue Lands on November 14th
Jordan Brand’s plans to celebrate the Summer Games in Tokyo, Japan would have been epic. Of course, the Olympics have now been postponed until August 2021, and the Jumpman Brand is now stuck with celebratory sneakers like the Air Jordan 3 “Tokyo”, and the reissue of the Metallic Silver Air Jordan 1 from 2001’s “Japan Pack”. But we knew early on that that Silver drop wouldn’t be a solo release, with last year’s reports focusing around the return of the pack’s Midnight Navy drop, too. Now we can confirm that the pair will be releasing in 2020, and is still expected to release for the Holiday season.
Old heads will know, but for you young cats: If it looks familiar, it should. This was the sneaker that Eric Koston based his debut Nike SB x Air Jordan 1 Low collaboration. But why exactly Eric chose it is clear — it’s one of the most significant Jordan releases in the brand’s storied history. There were several key elements to this turn-of-the-century pack. Firstly, the Japan Pack is earmarked as the first time Jordan Brand introduced non-original colorways of the Air Jordan 1 High to the market. Secondly, the “Japan” pack was the very first country-exclusive Air Jordan 1 release. And finally, Jordan Brand moved away from a traditional shoebox to house the releases in special briefcase-like packaging. The pack consisted of four Japan-exclusive colorways, each limited to a small-batch release. The Neutral Grey/White/Metallic Silver was limited to just 2001 pairs, while this White/Midnight Navy-Metallic Silver and the pack’s Black and White drops each received a 3000 pair production.
With so many firsts, it’s important that the next generation of sneakerheads understand its importance, and with the reissue of the pack’s two most desirable drops, we think that the message might get through. Like the Metallic Silver pair, we are expecting a few changes from the OG presented below, like Nike Air branding and likely some slight material changes, but it should arrive pretty much on par with the pair below. Update 06.27.20 // A first look at 2020’s Air Jordan 1 High OG “Midnight Navy” aka “Japan” has arrived, and as expected, it does arrive with a few minor tweaks to the original. Nike Air embroidery replaces the OG’s Jumpman, whilst the blue upper appears to be more of nubuck than suede. Finally, the Wings motif arrives by-way-of gel badges, a finish that was seen on the Pack’s original Metallic Silver pair. Grab a quick look here below, and stay tuned for updates!
