As the official release of the next signature Air Jordan release — the Air Jordan 39 — draws near, the whole sneaker world watches on to see what's next from the world's greatest ever.

This newest model, crafted under the discerning eye of Michael Jordan himself, marks a significant evolution in the Air Jordan series, both in performance and design.

During a recent presentation at Michael Jordan's private golf course, The Grove XXIII, Joël Greenspan, the lead designer for Jordan Brand, shared insights into the intensive development process of the Air Jordan 39. With Michael Jordan actively involved, this model received unprecedented direct input from the basketball legend, aiming to ground the line's storied heritage in practical, contemporary gameplay needs.

The Air Jordan 39 shifts focus from the brand’s traditional emphasis on aerial dynamics to the more grounded, strategic movements prevalent in today's game. This pivot is inspired by Jordan’s efficient on-court footwork, particularly his signature cross-step, which has influenced generations of players. After reviewing game footage from 1991, the design team engaged Jordan in a detailed discussion about his experiences and needs during play, which profoundly influenced the shoe's functional elements like cushioning, traction, and overall silhouette.

The launch will feature nine colorways that echo Jordan's Olympic jersey number and highlight the brand's connection to significant athletic milestones. The first release, the “Sol” colorway, will be available on July 23. It features a white base with a red Jumpman logo, symbolizing the foundation or 'sol' in French—a nod to the grounded techniques the shoe supports. Following this, the "Lumiere" colorway, representing Paris's famed City of Light, will debut on August 6, reflecting the city's nighttime skyline in a sleek black and white design.

Priced at $200, the Air Jordan 39 is set to hit the shelves in July, 2024.
