The National Basketball Association (NBA) is back on NBC (and for the first time on Peacock) after a 23-year break. In addition to cuing up John Tesh's "Roundball Rock" and modernizing its iconic laser peacock logo, NBC tasked Mike Tirico to interview the Chicago Bulls legend. The conversation, broken up into segments under the "MJ: Insights To Excellence" banner, sees the six-time NBA champion share his candid thoughts on the game of basketball from the comfort of his home.
The first clip (found below) sees "His Airness" talk about his competitiveness, desire to lace up his Air Jordans and play in today's NBA, and a funny anecdote about his most recent experience shooting a basketball.
Since his final retirement from professional basketball in 2003, MJ hasn't been known to make too many public appearances or give out many interviews. His sit-down with Tirico, then, is special. According to the man behind the Jumpman, his goal with the "Insights To Excellence" interview is to "pay it forward" to younger generations. As one of the greatest forces in basketball of all-time and highly-successful businessman and philanthropist, Jordan has a lot of valuable experience. Sharing some of it with the public is part will be part of his legacy.
On-feet, the 62-year-old is seen wearing a swoosh-less pair of the Air Jordan 1 Low. In the background of the interview, an art piece by Mark Smith, former Senior Creative Director of Innovation for Nike, Inc., can be seen hanging on a wall. "Smitty" contributed to and co-led several important sneaker designs for MJ—including a number of important milestone anniversary Air Jordans.
