Oct. 22, 2006 was just like most other Sundays before it. On the geo-political side of things, it brought about concerning news related to the Middle East. For fans of football, basketball, and the thin intersection between the two, this date marked a meeting between two legends in their respective sports: Ronaldinho Gaúcho and Michael Jordan.
Almost a year removed from his Ballon d'Or win, the Brazilian international was still on top of the world. Branding the number 10, Ronaldinho led FC Barcelona to a historic double, which saw the Spanish club win the 2005-06 LALIGA campaign and UEFA Champions League. The longtime Nike-sponsored athlete was the quintessential footballer. His graceful play on-the-pitch for club and country led countless youth across the globe to try and emulate his joga bonito style of play. But, what might've been most impressive about R10 around this time was that he was actually winning trophies, something many gifted players haven't been able to say.
It was only right, then, that the Nike Football-frontman link up with another face of the Swoosh conglomerate: "His Airness."
"I can't wait to meet him," said Ronaldinho ahead of his first encounter with the Air Jordan athlete at Nike's office in Barcelona, Spain. The Chicago Bulls legend was on a promotional tour for his brand's basketball camps. The occasion took place within the launch year of the Air Jordan 21, so the six-time NBA Champion gifted the footballer a Player-Exclusive (PE) style featuring "R10" branding on the heel.
"It made me very, very happy. I don't know yet if I'll ever put them on, or if I'll keep them as a trophy. However, I will remember this forever," expressed Ronaldinho in a video about his meeting with MJ23.
Over the years, the former Barça player has continuously showcased his admiration of MJ and support of Jordan Brand. Recently, Ronaldinho was spotted in a Jumpman-branded blue-and-green jersey made in partnership with the Confederação Brasileira de Futebol (CBF). The choice in wardrobe goes deeper than the Brazilian superstar simply wearing a cool shirt—it synchronizes two disparate worlds brought together by greatness.
