In 2024, one of the most polarizing headlines in the sneaker world emerged with the debut of the New Balance 1906L Loafer. Social media was immediately divided, with love/hate reactions dominating feeds — this writer, for one, was aligned to the former. As we move into 2025, the unconventional model is poised to build upon its bold entrance, now appearing in a sophisticated “Rich Oak” suede build.

This new iteration removes the model from its streetwear origins, embracing a more formal aesthetic. Rich brown suede envelops the upper, while black accents lend a timeless contrast. The color palette and material choice bring the silhouette closer to the form of a traditional loafer, making it more palatable for those who might have initially balked at its design.

Still, the 1906L stays true to its roots, with geometric overlays on the quarter and heel cage that harken back to its 1906R lineage. The model also introduces a significant new design element: a stitched forefoot cup, which wraps around the toe and further enhances the loafer’s high-fashion sensibility. This subtle but impactful update bridges the gap between casual footwear and upscale formality.

A matching Black Suede pair is also confirmed to be released.

While New Balance has not announced an official release date, the 1906L "Rich Oak" is expected to drop soon.
