Available Now // This New Balance 997 Sport Channels Early-’90s Gaming Consoles
Helped along by back-to-back bangers from Bodega last year, the adoration for the New Balance 997 Sport came on stronger than a thirsty dude on Tinder. Since then, we’ve seen a slew of crisp general releases, from classically-colored options to vibrantly inspired editions. This next pair fits well into the latter of those categories, so much so that it appears to draw inspiration from vintage gaming consoles of the early 1990s.
Fittingly, the original 997 debuted in 1990, which was a big period for gaming. The Neo Geo, Sega Game Gear, and the SNES owned the space, but it was the latter that sticks in the mind of most, thanks to its memorable grey casing and colorful controls. This 997 Sport mimics that memory in every way, pairing primary colors of blue, green, yellow and orange against space greys and light bones. Age-look sail midsoles and gum rubber outsoles add to the nostalgia, and all that it’s missing is dual Start/Select buttons to complete the aesthetic.
Take a peep at this colorful console-inspired New Balance 997 Sport below, and you can find pairs available right now, right here at YCMC for $110.
