Boston-Based brand New Balance has been riding a color wave in 2019, dipping their toes into the unknown with vivid palates, retoolings and more. But their recent “Patchwork” collection is perhaps the brand’s most audacious adventure yet. Joining the previously previewed 997 and 998 is another mismatched rendition of the latter — but this time they’re going interstellar. This Made in the USA New Balance 998 “Galaxy” still keep construction and materials at the forefront of design, though, with this particular pair still heavily focused on buttery suedes and fine fabrics, the latter appearing here in multiple patterns and hues, from a psychedelic green and black toebox, vintage-style embroidered blue-on-blue at the “N” motifs, and water paint printed textiles at the tongue and collar. But while those patterns all seem juxtaposed to the “Galaxy” theme displayed on the midsole, the blues, pinks, and greens of the fabrics fit into the interstellar palate. As does the black, and two-toned deep purple suede overlays. The aforementioned midsoles arrive star-spangled, paired with a black backdrop at the heel and blue at the tongue, while a pre-aged look ABZORB midsole and tri-color outsole complete the design.

Both Made in the USA and constructed with ultra-premium materials, this Galaxy New Balance 998 is — we think — grossly underpriced for what you get, retailing for just $180 right now from New Balance’s official website. Go get ’em.
