2004’s Hello Kitty x Nike Air Prestos are true unicorns in the sneaker world. Created in celebration of Hello Kitty’s 30th anniversary, the planned run of 500 pairs for five different colorways never quite made it to production, dwindling down to ultra-limited friends and family release. There are said to be approximately 60 pairs in existence — but all of that may change, with a prospective return to the collection imminent, according to Brendan Dunne of Complex Sneakers.

Sneaker design leged and current head of YEEZY footwear Steven Smith spearheaded the project back in 2004, telling the Complex Sneakers Podcast back in June, that former Nike CEO Mark Parker direct the project his way, as he understood Smith to be an avid follower of Japanese culture.

“I think we sampled seven of them,” Smith said, “and then Sanrio picked, like, four or five that they went through with. And they were supposed to make 500 I think of each of the different styles, and it turned out that it didn’t work out that way, that they only did somewhere between 10 and 24 pairs of each style.”

The designer says he kept sample versions that Nike never ended up fully producing and still has all of the graphics files and presentation boards (pictured below) he used to help design the shoes.

Though no details were shared on the 2022 pair’s design, nor has a specified release date been noted, the source has suggested that pairs may well arrive in early 2022. Whether it will be a brand new colorway or retros of the original five (pictured below) remains to be seen, so until more details emerge, garb a quick look at some of the 2004 editions below via GOAT, and be sure to keep your eyes locked on the official HOUSE OF HEAT Twitter account for updates.

First looks at the Hello Kitty x Nike Air Presto release for 2022 has landed, courtesy of @mvncntshowing a brand new colorway, confirming that the brand will keep the old samples in the vault — for now. What we will be getting is a pair clad in University Blue garnished with Hello Kitty faces, kitty-branded heel clips, and special-edition boxing. Take a look for yourself just below, and look for pairs to arrive on May 2nd at select global retailers, followed by a Nike US release on June 10.
