Artist Lauren Halsey Celebrates South Central LA on the Air Force 1 High

LA-based artist and activist Lauren Halsey is renowned for rethinking the possibilities of art, architecture, and community engagement. She produces both standalone artworks and site-specific projects, particularly in the South Central neighborhood of Los Angeles where her family has lived for several generations. Now, the 32-year old creator, who has previously had showings at the MOCA in LA, now links up with Nike for a special-edition Air Force 1 High, which again highlights her community-minded narrative.

The black-based pair arrives locked down in classic leather, but adds sublet touches of character through the use of supple suede on the toe, heel and lacestay overlays, and textured leather in the rear. Black midsoles sit atop blackened-blue outsoles, while black liners and tongue tips add to the murdered-out base. Color, which is used very sparingly, arrives on the green gradient tongues and mismatched red and green laces, as well as hairline lining on the leather heel detail. For a personal touch, the pairs come equipped with Lauren’s social media handle “SUMMAEVERYTHANG” hits the lateral heel, South Central-inspired collage insoles, and affirmative messages of “Neighborhood,” “Autonomy” and “Pride” written on the tongue tags. Copping off the design is interchangeable straps and Swooshes, with translucent\, patent and reflective options pictured below.

With two “Force is Female” Air Force 1s surfacing late last week — and now this effort from a woman who shakes up the status quo — it’s likely that these will form part of a new “Force is Female” collection for late 2019, but that’s yet to be confirmed by the Swoosh.
