Though it may seem like a fashionable fad, Nike has been forward-thinking in the sustainable footwear department for the better part of two decades. Their mid-2000s "Considered" collection was among the first to prioritize eco-friendly sneaker construction, starting with the Considered Boot and later evolving to revamped versions of classics like the Moawabb. The 2006 Nike Watercat was one such innovation, holding a unique spot in the annals of Nike's most unconventional footwear creations. A hybrid of Vibram FiveFinger and sandal, the shoe could be seen everywhere from trails and pool decks to backyard gatherings.
In 2023, Nike is reviving the model line with a cutting-edge design — the Nike ACG Watercat+ — updating it for a modern audience while still embracing the essence of the early 21st-century release, making it more versatile for a wide range of environments. Notable features include a thicker footbed, a contemporary woven upper, and enhanced rear stability. However, the design retains the toggle lace system from the 2005 version.
Already revealed in a handful of colorways, its next is by far the most striking yet, as it appears in a bold Vivd Sulfur weave, with color-matched midsoles and jet-black trim flushed throughout.
Grab an official look at the Nike ACG Watercat+ "Vivid Sulfur" below, and expect to see these rollout at select Swoosh stockists and Nike.com on July 12, 2023, for $125.
