From fireworks to the Lion Dance, China sure knows how to bring color and celebration to the annual Lunar New Year festivities. So it should come as no surprise that footwear brands look to work in many of these colorful elements when it comes to their annual Chinese New Year footwear collections. Last year we saw fireworks as the focus, but this year an overarching theme is becoming apparent: the Lion Dance. Seen in quite a literal sense on two ostentatious options on the Air Force 1 Low for kids, a first look at the adults Nike Air Force 1 Low CNY “Year of the Tiger” shows something far more subdued, however, it does take on board several shared design and material elements.
Like the kids-exclusives, this too features an upper constructed in canvas, though here it avoids vibrant pigments in favor of simple sail shading. This is topped-and tailed by communal hues shared across the aforementioned pairs, with red, orange, aqua, and yellow trimming the outsole, liners, and tongue tags. Satin heel and Swoosh overlays add another layer of texture to the pair, with the latter taking on the Lunar New Year’s animal print in bold black and gold. Just below, you’ll spot an embroidered motif of the festival lion, with it’s theme strengthened by a modified 王 (King) tongue tag that honors the beast.
