It’s widely known that Japanese footwear enthusiasts have an impeccable eye for style. With that in mind, Nike has opened up their iconic Air Max 1 for the people of Japan to design for Air Max Day 2023. The result was first previewed on SNKRS mid-last year, but now with the annual celebration now approaching, we get our best look yet at the Nike Air Max 1 “Design By Japan” through official Nike.com imagery.

Inspired by the Nike Sting, a running shoe from the late 70’s, the rendition sports a vintage aesthetic with old school white mesh, tumbled green leather overlays, and burnt orange heels all playing pivotal roles. Given the origin of the inspiration, vintage accents are plentiful, from exposed foamr tongues to cream laces and tinted midsoles; a classic gum rubber outsole sits underfoot to harness the early days, too. The pair is then completed by a special gold Air Max 1 hang tage, retro tongue branding, and special graphic insoles.
