Nike's extensive portfolio of special-edition sneakers paying homage to various cultural events and holidays has been both celebrated and scrutinized, particularly in their attempts to honor the annual Puerto Rican Day Parade in New York City. Past blunders have marked their efforts, including incorrect placement of the Puerto Rican flag and inadvertently using Panamanian indigenous designs on Air Force 1s. For 2023, the Swoosh will look to go in a different direction in both silhouette and inspiration, drawing from delectable Puerto Rican desserts on two colorways of the Air Max 1.
These unique pairs come in a specially designed "Familia" branded box, a nod to helados (ice cream), hinting at the underlying theme of the sneakers. The design prominently features Piragua, a traditional Puerto Rican snowcone, explicitly represented on the tongue tag. The "Blue Gale" pair sports a red, white, and blue flavor, while the "Orange Frost" iteration boasts coco, parcha, and piña.
Additional shared features include a gleaming jewel Nike Swoosh, a metallic lace dubrae proudly proclaiming "Puerto Rico", and an embroidered label of the island's name on the right shoe's heel. Underneath, a clean white foam midsole housing visible Air in the heel complements the tonal outsole that mirrors the upper shades. Completing the package is a coordinating towel featuring the same vibrant graphic on each sneaker's tongue tag.
Nike's Puerto Rico Pack, featuring these specially crafted Air Max 1s, is slated for a June 6th release through Nike and select online and in-store retailers. A wider release of the "Blue Gale" colorway will follow on Nike.com on July 27.
