Making its initial debut as a Japan exclusive in 2004, the coveted Nike Air Max 1 “Urawa” is heralded as one of the true grails of the Air Max line.
Paying homage to the Urawa Red Diamonds, one of Japan’s most renowned football clubs, the sneaker captures the essence of the team’s spirit and was an early indication of Nike’s ability to merge culture and design seamlessly. Now, almost 20 years later, the two parties will reunite to bring the collaboration back — this time in a new, alternate palette.
For the most part, the pair keeps the same design, with like-for-like materials and color placement consistent. And while the colors used again stays to Urawa’s kit, here, it’s delivered in significantly different proportions.
While the OGopts for a grey mesh and red overlay set, the 2023 release opts for a majority monochrome look, with black mesh uppers, and overlays and tongues of grey and white leather. Red and gold are worked into the upper eyestays, Air supports, and tongue tags, with an all-white sole unit sitting underfoot. Urawa Dragons logos are embroidered onto the heels and stamped onto the insoles to complete the design and to confirm the partnership.
