30 years on from the Wall’s fall.

Through all the bad memories of the Berlin Wall, it’s colorful west-side and ultimate tear-down of the wall in 1989 remained the most memorable — and positive — moments of a divided Germany. Not long after David Hasselhoff belted out a tune and the wall came down, new communities emerged — one of them the bustling Berlin club scene. Just two years on from the Wall’s fall, the Air Max 180 arrived and quickly became the sneaker of choice for Berlin club goers. 30 years on from the momentous occasion, Nike is bringing this special edition to market on Air Max Day.

Combining tumbled leathers with cage-like mesh overlays said to be inspired by the Wall’s brutalist architecture. And, like the wall, it’s all business up the front (the East) and a colorful party out the back (the West), with vibrant pinks and greens paying homage to the myriad of artworks, graffiti, and murals that were painted all over the West’s side of the wall. Finishing off the design are the words “UNITY” and “FREEDOM” printed in bold block letters under the translucent outsole.

This special edition Air Max 180 will release on Air Max Day, March 26th, exclusively at Berlin-based retailers like SNS, before rolling out to a handful of retailers throughout Europe.
