The All-New Nike Air Max Motif is Inspired by Tinker Hatfield’s Original Air Max Model

Though Tinker Hatfield is responsible for some of Nike and Jordan Brand’s most iconic sneakers, there was no bigger impact made on the market than his original Air Max design that showcased Nike’s patented Air Unit for the very first time. It not only rejuvenated Nike’s core running division but reinvented the brand’s image on a global scale. Shortly after, every kids had to ‘have the shoes with the bubble’ — and the rest was history. Now, 35 years on, Nike will celebrate the design with another new model — the Nike Air Max Motif — that pulls direct influence from the Air Max origins, as well as its recent advancements in tech.

Borrowing design lines and textiles from the original release — and even its OG “Royal” colorway — the pair is essentially a contemporary take on the OG, with wavy mudguards, mesh uppers, and soft nubucks all honoring Tinker’s 35-year-old design. There are new tweaks, too, like translucent Swoosh overlays, excess eyestay panels, and a revamped sole unit complete with taller, more supportive Air.
