Though it hasn’t kicked off as well as Nike would have hoped, their all-new retro-inspired Nike Air Max TW 1 will likely remain a strong focus for the brand as we enter the 2023 season; and it’s now found itself part of the brand’s wider Lunar New Year collection to help the cause.
Poaching design cues from the Air Max Plus and Tailwind lineages, the new model brings a similar feel to the short-lived AirMax 270 React ENG, as it stacked clunky sole units with wavy detail up top. There’s a clear callout to the Tailwind V at the collar piece, with its acute angle almost replicated one-for-one. Dual Air bubbles in the back are reminiscent of 1996’s Air Tailwind II, while wavy midfoot layers can be traced back to a handful of Air Max Plus and Tailwind models from years past. Above all of the inspiration, there’s a multitude of textiles used, from mesh to ribbed cotton and leathers to translucent sheaths.
Its color scheme is in-line with the collection’s overarching themes, including striking whites, vibrant red, and hyper jades — with special Eastern-influenced detail on the pair’s mid panel and lace bling.
