Nike’s penchant for bare-Air experimentation on retro silhouettes has been a consistent focus for the brand, spawning impressive and widely-loved creations like the Vapormax Plusand 360, and rather questionable ones like the Vapormax Gliese. Though it may be a little too early to call, their next sole-less silhouette, the Nike Air VaporMax EVO, looks to be a winner.
Set for arrival in late 2020 or early 2021, the Vapormax EVO tackles the design DNA of the Air Max 96 II up top and pairs it with a heavily armored midsole piece and a much shallower VaporMax sole unit that we’ve become accustomed to. Despite the obvious references to the 1996 runner, the new VaporMax EVO still has some significant adjustments that distance itself from its origins. A new neoprene tongue features rubber plating with a fresh VaporMax logo in avant-garde fashion, an “EVO” badge on the heel, and a sweeping, straight mudguard that’s reminiscent of the Air Max 90. The aforementioned VaporMax unit aligns closely to the contemporary shape seen in the Vapormax 2020 Flyknit, though it still has an overall aesthetic that marries it tightly to the marquee VaporMax Plus.
