When the Cortez debuted in 1972, Cali cats wasted no time migrating the sneaker from the track to the streets, forging its way to staple status for sneakerheads in LA. Nike has commemorated its importance to LA sneaker culture on many occasions, with city-specific pairs like the City of Angels, as well as teaming up for a handful of collaborations with Compton’s own Kendrick Lamar. This year, not only will Nike be celebrating the city’s connection to the classic, but will also be working it into the Opening Day activities for the MLB’s reigning champs, the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Sporting a color scheme and detailing in-line with the franchise, the pairs present in a staple white leather base with overlays of royal blue and hints of red, too. The latter is worked into the pair’s lateral baseball-style Los Angeles stitchwork, as well as contrast efforts on the Swoosh, before more royal rushes into the liners, rear overlays, and midsole wedge. Tongue detail, which now reads “LA”, also features the franchise’s trio of colors, and the pair is completed by Cortez ’72 dubraes.
