Otherwise known as the bean-throwing festival, Setsubun literally translates to “Seasonal Division,” referring to its celebration on the final day of Winter. It’s here where Nike set in their newest Dunk’s theme, centered around a seasonal illustration by Utagawa Kuniyoshi, pictured below. In it, Kintoki is fighting off demons, which, according to traditional Japanese beliefs, appear with the changing of the seasons. To fend them off, people throw dry soybeans at them, yelling “Demon out, fortune inside”

Like the accompanying Nike Dunk High Up “Seven Gods of Good Fortune”, this also provides an exterior to mimic the Edo-era artwork, with uppers of buttery soy bean-like creams, browns, and tans, with pack-specific purples and golds running rife through the pair’s branding and demonic motifs to complete the design.
